[edit] World Wide General Strike, May 2012

Take the Square, international Occupy movement [1] is preparing a World Wide General Strike to reach maximum launch on May 15 and continue from then. | Their announcement. (Also contains a good history of the movement in Europe which is not known to many North Americans.)

I have copied their announcement onto its own page at this wiki. I will work on marking it up so that it looks good. I also will put another copy of it here for people to modify or improve and then maybe send back to them. I call these the Static copy and Dynamic copy respectively.

This is an excellent initiative. Even Occupations who have had their camps suppressed can rally on these important days to support the international cause and at the same time institute whatever measures are appropriate / capable of being done in their town.

There is also a facebook group calling for similar action [2].

[edit] Oakland USA, October-November 2011

On October 27, 2011 the Oakland GA voted, with 96%, for General Strike on Wednesday, November 2, 2011. This is likely to be supported by other locations. http://www.thenation.com/blog/164225/occupyusa-blog-thursday-oct-27-frequent-updates

Occupy Oakland apparently has a strike coordinating committee that can vote on things apart from the GA. They just voted to march to the famous port on Nov. 2 and attempt to "shut it down" on General Strike day. A major challenge. The longshoreman have indicated they will not, or cannot, support striking that day. http://www.thenation.com/blog/164250/occupyusa-blog-friday-oct-28-frequent-updates

[edit] Oakland's City Council response

On Tuesday, February 7, 2012 the council is expected voted on a resolution that would direct the city administrator, mayor and police to crack down on protesters blocking streets and holding rallies without a permit.

[edit] Europe, November 14 2012

On November 14, 2012, there was a general strike in Europe.
