[edit] Expandable, multi-country hosting

I suggest paying a big commercial web host to get some dynamic hosting for a wiki at an occupytogether.org web address. A MediaWiki wiki or wiki farm with that web address will expand very rapidly in number of articles, and number of page views. Trying to buy hardware and doing it from the ground up would be futile, time-consuming, staff-consuming, and very frustrating. As long as the organizers own the domain name, the hosting company can always be changed if there are problems. I have recommended one web host with servers worlwide to one group of activists in Russia. Their site was shut down when it was first hosted on Russian servers, and then later on when moved to Ukrainian servers. They own the domain name, and after moving their site to the worldwide host the site is still around. I am sure there are many web hosts with enough servers in multiple nations to dynamically handle any load, and avoid most censorship pressures. --Timeshifter 00:19, 31 October 2011 (CET)

Definitely need some sort of permanent documentary center for the global movement, although probably not with "Wall Street" in the title. What do you mean by "an occupytogether.org web address," do you mean a domain name with occupytogether as part of the name? Crib Latice 04:46, 26 November 2011 (CET)
A subdomain such as wiki.occupytogether.org might work. Could even put that subdomain on a different web host from wherever occupytogether.org is hosted. It is possible to do. I had a site once at a subdomain of another site. The subdomain was on a different server and host. It wasn't a wiki site though. --Timeshifter 05:07, 26 November 2011 (CET)
Would people actually use a wiki? That's my first question, and second, what would its purpose be? What would it have that things like Facebook don't, and would people recognize that? I heard somewhere there is a wiki used for creating demands documents or something, which would be ideal, a way of organizing the movement that facebook etc. lack. Look at Wikipedia. There are many things a wiki can do that Facebook can not do. And vice-versa. It would be easy to create pages for each city. As many pages as necessary per city. I do not know if people would edit the wiki though. I think they would over time, but only if it were a subdomain of the most well-known organizing site, occupytogether.org --Timeshifter 06:55, 26 November 2011 (CET)
I've created wikis myself, and yes: you have to have some sort of draw or positioning, just as you suggest. So how would one go about asking occupytogether.org to let us put up a wiki? Crib Latice 07:17, 26 November 2011 (CET)
I don't know. Might try here:

Also might ask User:Amgine if she knows more. --Timeshifter 07:50, 26 November 2011 (CET)
